As I have traveled around Brisbane this week, the beautiful poinciana trees with their brilliant red flowers have caught my eye. From our previous posts on plants (Day 8) and native wrapping alternatives (Day 16), this Christmas I have been keen to incorporate this stunning red Australian native as part of our Christmas table decorations.

On Day 24, we are exploring some last-minute natural table decorations using Australian native flora and edible fruit to help get your table ready for Christmas on Wednesday.

Native Australian Table Decorations

From the stunningly red poinciana tree to the bottle brush bush, Australia is blessed with some beautiful native flora that is in bloom over Christmas. Creating a nature inspired Australian Christmas is a wonderful way to avoid the “plastic” feel of the modern Aussie Christmas. Get the kids involved and take them scouting for interesting looking bits and pieces in your local park or native bushland. Collect twigs, leaves and of course, gumnuts that will compliment your Australian Christmas decorating plan.

Here are some examples for incorporating native flora on your Christmas table this year!

Edible Fruit Table Decorations

We are blessed with lots of beautiful red and green seasonal fruit produce which can serve as both decoration and dessert. Pomegranates, watermelon, strawberries and cherries are some red fruit options combined with kiwi fruits, green grapes, rosemary or mint to create edible decorations.

Embracing Mismatching Table Settings

Most of us would not have more than 8 of the same plate so having your relatives over for Christmas is a time to embrace the beauty of mismatched crockery, cutlery and table linen. This can even be turned into a table feature or a fun little tradition where members of the family get to choose where they sit or even pick the plate they want to use year after year!

It’s important to remember that these plates will not be empty for long so don’t stress out about everything matching perfectly – it is the company and the joy of sharing a meal together that is more significant.

DIY Christmas Crackers

Christmas crackers were an item that I was determined to reframe this year. The plastic toy, paper hat, dodgy jokes and single-use wrapping were items that although provided temporary entertainment, always ended up in the bin destined for landfill before sunset on Christmas day.

Today I was very excited to make reusable Christmas Crackers for our family Christmas with my parents. Combining my mum’s passion for sewing, my Dad’s artistic talent and my desire for waste minimisation, we together created a Christmas Cracker that we hope to use for years to come. Here is what we did:

We replaced the paper hat with actual Santa hats (we have used these Santa hats for years with my Mum’s side of the family). The seemingly random plastic toy was instead a recyclable Christmas ornament – a Christmas tree puzzle that my Dad created from cardboard we had lying around. Rather than being made of single-use paper, we wrapped the Christmas crackers in material that will double as a serviette. To finish them off and secure the cracker, I raided my ribbon collection to tie off the ends.
